Specifications that matter on site

What accuracy can I expect?

Real time: 3 cm absolute (RTK gaps under 100 m), 2 cm relative. Post-processed: 3 cm absolute, 1 cm relative, 2 cm repeatability, 0.5 cm plane thickness within 10 m of the path, 0.015° heading. Up to 1 million points per m².

Which variant do I have and what range does it really give?

16-line/120 m, 32-line/120 m or 32-line/300 m (320k or 640k points/s). The 300 m figure is raw sensor range — distant points are sparse and filtered as noise, so in drone mode the useful range is closer to 120 m.

Handheld scanning

What is the correct routine?

Same discipline as the K series: start still on a flat surface facing features, wait 10 s after the point cloud appears, tilt about 15° forward (max 20°), stay 0.5 m off surfaces, avoid pointing at traffic for long, open doors in advance, pause in doorways, loop-close and return to the start.

Can I pause and resume?

No — no breakpoint resume. Stop and start a new map; stitch with Map Fusion (handheld only).

RTK, NTRIP and georeferencing in Australia

Which NTRIP / CORS network should I use?

Any standard NTRIP caster works with the L2 Pro. Free option: Geoscience Australia’s AusCORS service (register for an account). Commercial networks (for example AllDayRTK, HxGN SmartNet, and state services such as CORSnet-NSW) give denser coverage and support — check coverage for your area. Enter host, port, mountpoint, username and password under RTK Settings → Custom in LixelGO. Your phone needs mobile data for the whole scan.

What coordinate system will my point cloud be in?

The scanner records the frame your caster delivers (XGRIDS lists WGS84, CGCS2000 and ITRF2008; Australian networks stream GDA2020-based corrections) with geodetic heights. Convert to your project datum and MGA zone during LixelStudio processing (coordinate transformation step). AECT sets this up with you during onboarding — ask if you need AHD heights.

Do I need RTK for every scan?

No. RTK (or control points) is only needed when you must deliver absolute coordinates or verify accuracy. Relative measurements, BIM verification and visualisation work without it.

Source: K2 manual v1.2.0 · Absolute-coordinate chapter

What are the minimum RTK conditions for a usable georeferenced scan?

Outdoors with a fixed solution before you start (module LED green, app shows Fixed). Scan area larger than 10 m, more than 20 valid RTK points (over 100 for good results), keep any continuous unfixed stretch under 50 m, keep the unit within 15° of vertical, and for accuracy verification the route must be at least 100 m long and not a straight line.

Source: K2 manual v1.2.0 · Precautions

RTK or PPK?

RTK needs a live correction stream during the scan and gives you absolute coordinates immediately. PPK records raw satellite data and is corrected in LixelStudio afterwards — use it where there is no mobile coverage or on air-gapped sites. Select the mode on the scan start page before you begin.

The RTK or NTRIP light in the app is red — what now?

Both red: the RTK module is not connected — power off, reseat the module, restart. RTK red / NTRIP green: same fix (quick-connect mode). RTK green / NTRIP red: the caster is not reachable — check the phone’s internet and your caster login. Both green but 0 satellites: hardware fault — cross-test with another module and contact AECT.

Drone mounting (DJI M300 / M350)

Which aircraft are supported?

DJI M300 and M350 with the XGRIDS bracket and gimbal adapter ring. The scanner takes power and RTK data through the SkyPort. Other airframes are not covered by the manual — ask AECT before planning a job on anything else.

Source: L2 Pro manual v2.4.0 · Appendix / FAQ

What flight parameters?

Recommended 3 m/s at 30 m AGL (max 5 m/s at 30 m; no limit at 50 m). Pushing to 50 m and 5–7 m/s costs accuracy (about 5–10 cm, limited by the aircraft RTK). One 20-minute flight at 60 m line spacing covers roughly 216,000 m².

Source: L2 Pro manual v2.4.0 · FAQ

What must I set before take-off?

LixelGO 1.2.0+: mount type Drone, RTK type Aerial/DJI, ellipsoid matching the controller (WGS84/CGCS2000). If you skip this the aircraft RTK is not written to gnss.csv and LixelStudio cannot recognise drone mode. Toggle the bracket safety button and secure the Type-C cable — a loose cable drops RTK mid-flight.

Source: L2 Pro manual v2.4.0 · Appendix

What are the limits in drone mode?

No live view (no 4G — drift is only visible after processing), no Map Fusion (manual + ICP registration works with about 50% feature-rich overlap), effective range ≈120 m, panoramas slightly asymmetric. Process in LixelStudio 3.3 or later; set tilt 180° if the mount type was recorded wrongly.

Vehicle mounting

How fast can I drive?

The manual allows 20–30 km/h with a 40 km/h maximum. AECT field guidance: stay between 15 and 30 km/h and aim for 15–20 km/h — slower is closer to handheld quality; faster degrades registration.

What accuracy and outputs does vehicle mode give?

Horizontal 3 cm / vertical 5 cm absolute (RTK gaps under 100 m, within recommended speed), 2 cm relative, 3 cm repeatability, 1 cm thickness, colourised point cloud. Not supported in vehicle mode: 3DGS, point-cloud enhancement and Map Fusion — plan the photoreal pass on foot.

What is in the vehicle-mount kit and how long does it run?

Main bracket with battery plate, quick-release bracket, two electric suction cups with a wireless monitoring module, V-mount battery (about 3 h; handle battery 1.5 h), cables, charger and tools. The suction cups run 8–12 h on their own 2,000 mAh batteries; mount on a flat, clean surface, use the safety strap, and re-check suction on hot days.

Care, battery and firmware

How should I look after the batteries?

Charge fully after each day of use (a few hours on the supplied 34 W charger). A fully charged pack that sits idle must be topped up at least every 3 months, and a flat pack recharged within 3 days. Packs are rated for 300–500 cycles before capacity drops to 70–80%. Damage from ignoring these rules is not covered by warranty.

What temperatures and weather can the scanner handle?

Operate between −20 °C and 50 °C (PortalCam: to 45 °C, out of direct sun). IP54 means dust-protected and splash-resistant only — do not scan in heavy rain, standing water or heavy dust. The unit shuts itself down if it overheats; let it cool before restarting and never block the vents.

How do I clean the LiDAR window and lenses?

Use the supplied lint-free cloth and wipe gently in one direction. Never touch the LiDAR or lens surfaces with your fingers. Check for fogging when moving between hot and cold environments — fogged optics ruin colourisation.

How do I update the firmware?

Battery above 70%. Download the package from xgrids.com/intl/support/download, do not unzip or rename it, switch the scanner to USB mode, copy the file to the root of the drive (next to the model folder, not inside it), eject, then power off and on. Alternating red/green means it is upgrading — do not remove the battery. Confirm the new version in the app afterwards.

Firmware must be updated in sequence.

Versions below 2.4.1 go 2.4.1 → 3.0.2 → 3.1.1 → 3.2.1 … in order. Battery above 70%, package unzipped and unrenamed in the USB root.

My project folders turned into shortcuts on the USB drive.

A USB worm on the PC hid the real folders. Open a command prompt in the drive root, run attrib -s -h -r /s /d *.*, delete the .lnk shortcuts, copy your data out, then format the scanner disk from the app and scan the PC for malware.

AECT support in Australia

Who do I contact for support, warranty or repairs?

AECT Solutions is the XGRIDS National Distributor for Australia. Email info@aect.solutions with your serial number and a short description (photos or a screen recording help), or book an onboarding call from this hub. We handle warranty assessment and any return-to-factory logistics with XGRIDS on your behalf, and keep loan units for eligible warranty cases where stock allows.

What does the warranty cover?

XGRIDS scanners carry a 12-month limited manufacturer warranty against defects. Physical damage, water ingress beyond the IP rating, and battery damage caused by not following the storage rules (recharge after use, top up idle packs every 3 months, rescue flat packs within 3 days) are excluded by XGRIDS. Extended-warranty options are available through AECT — ask us before your first year ends.

Can I hire a Lixel L2 Pro or try before I buy?

Yes. AECT runs the largest XGRIDS hire and demo fleet in Australia — book online at aect.solutions/rent. Demo-to-Buy hire fees are credited 100% toward a purchase of the same product.

What training is included, and what can I add?

Every purchase includes remote onboarding (Tier 0) — this hub, a 1-on-1 call and email support. Professional on-site training runs on your own site and your own job (Tier 2), and the 3DGS Masterclass program covers the full capture-to-delivery workflow. Book through the training page or ask your AECT contact.

Can AECT process my data for me?

Yes. Send us the raw project folder (or a drive) and we return classified point clouds, meshes, floor plans or 3DGS scenes — processed in Australia on AECT hardware. Get an instant estimate at aect.solutions/services/data-processing.

Where is my data stored?

Nothing leaves your machine unless you choose to upload. LixelStudio runs fully offline; LCC Studio processes locally (the online edition only checks your licence when you create or start a model); LCC Cloud publishing is optional. For air-gapped sites XGRIDS offers an offline LCC edition on a hardware dongle — ask AECT.

Answers are condensed from the official XGRIDS user manuals (docs.xgrids.com, mirrored 11 Sep 2026) and AECT support practice. The manual is authoritative where they differ; specifications change with firmware and software releases.
